George Thacher correspondence with Nathaniel Barrell, 1787-1800.

The earliest letters discuss the U.S. Constitution and some disagreements the men, whose friendship and regard for each other comes through quite clearly, had over its wisdom and chances for success. Religion also features prominently in their letters, with Thatcher arguing vehemently against the mixture of religion and politics. The men also discuss foreign events (most prominently the French Revolution) and domestic affairs and chat about their everyday activities and family matters. The majority of the letters are from Mr. Thatcher to Mr. Barrell. Also includes pamphlet entitled A brief Account of the present State, Income, Expenditures, & c. of the Society for Propagating the Gospel Among the Indians, and Others, in North America, 1795. (By order, Peter Thacher, Secretary, Boston, January 1795).
